Our Services

Neighbourhood Legal Services is a non-profit and independent community legal clinic that has been serving the community since 1973.  We provide free legal services and assistance to low income individuals who live within our catchment area and qualify for our services.  We abide by this Code of Ethics in our work.

We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. As a non-profit corporation our Members play an important role in our governance. You can see our latest Annual Report here.
Neighbourhood Legal Services provides direct legal services to more than 1500 clients and community members each year. In addition we make hundreds of referrals, and engage and assist hundreds more through our public legal education, law reform and community development work.

NLS is able to provide both high quality and high volume services largely due to our highly motivated and dedicated staff and Board of Directors, and with the support of the community. NLS is also able to realize the long recognized advantages inherent in the legal clinic model. Not only is NLS highly responsive to community needs, it is a lean and highly efficient organization.

We are also able to draw from the vast institutional experience and expertise present within the legal clinic system as a whole. This rich pool of resources allows us to consult on and receive opinions and other litigation support in difficult cases. We also greatly benefit from Legal Aid Ontario's highly expert Clinic Resource Office. These resources allow us to deliver quality services at a level far beyond our modest resources.
