Students and Volunteers

Volunteers and Student Placements

Neighbourhood Legal Services receives many inquiries from students interested in volunteer opportunities and placements for academic credit.

At this time, NLS is unable to offer paid placements. Students who work with us are typically recruited through our ongoing partnerships with local law schools for credit, or are self-funded through summer public interest fellowships secured through their law program. From time to time, NLS also considers applications from volunteer students.

Because our capacity to supervise and host students is limited, we cannot guarantee that a placement or volunteer opportunity will be available.

Placement Terms
NLS organizes student placements around three terms each year:
January — winter term
May — summer term
September — fall term

Students are encouraged to apply approximately 2–3 months before the start of the term.

Application Deadlines
For placements starting in January, please apply by November 1.
For placements starting in May, please apply by March 1.
For placements starting in September, please apply by July 1.

How to Apply
To apply, please send a letter of interest and resume to: [email protected]

In your application, please indicate your preferred area or areas of practice:

Housing
Income Security
Immigration
Health Justice

Please note that orientation takes place during approximately the first two weeks of each placement cycle. Orientation is mandatory. NLS is an in-person workplace.
