ARTICLING OPPORTUNITIES 2021 - 2022
Articling Position: Immigration and Refugee Law
NEIGHBOURHOOD LEGAL SERVICES is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario under the Legal Aid Services Act.
We are hiring one articling position available for the 2021-2022 term in the area of immigration and refugee law.
NLS’ catchment area is the east side of downtown Toronto. Since our first funding grant in 1973 we have been serving this community in a number of ways primarily through providing legal services and leading systemic advocacy. Our immigration work focuses primarily on the regularization of status for individuals (permanent residence and citizenship) as well as family reunification. We also appear before all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board as well as the Federal Court.
We have had articling students in each of the past 10 years and all the students have been able to gain valuable experience in working with and representing clients. They have carried their own files, conducted both simple and complex trials where permitted, negotiated settlements and worked independently with colleagues, community partners and opposing counsel. Strong written advocacy is required in this position.
We work with a client group that is poor and many have disabilities especially related to mental health. Many of our clients are recent immigrants and we work regularly with interpreters.
NLS hires articling students for 12 months at a weekly rate of $575 (with a possible increase, based on funding). We of course do cover any expenses incurred.
If you are interested in exploring this opportunity further please send your application including the following:
1. Cover letter
2. Resume
3. Contact information for 3 references
4. Any reference letters
Applications should be sent by email to Asiya Hirji at [email protected] by 5:00 pm on April 23, 2021.
We are expecting students will start the Articling term in July 2021.
