Intake Process

To access services at Neighbourhood Legal Services you must first complete

an intake. An intake is a method of collecting information about you and

your legal issue to allow us to serve you better.

Our intake process has been modified due to covid-19

HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH US:
  • If you are an existing client, please contact your legal caseworker directly about your case.
  • For new matters, you can do an intake by phone or online
    • By phone: please call 416-861-0677 X702 and leave a message. Your call will be returned within 1-2 business days; please be patient with us. If you have an email address, leave it with your phone message; this will help us connect with you faster.
    • Online: Please see our ONLINE intake page.
    • DROP-IN HOURS: We are open for drop-ins from 11:00AM-4:30PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. This is for people who do not have a phone or Internet access. We can only admit 2-3 clients into our office at a time. Expect to be screened at the door prior to entry, so service may take longer than usual.

We are committed to keeping you informed about policy changes and your legal rights during this time. Please visit our new page COVID-19 & Legal Resources and check back here, and on our Facebook or Twitter feeds, for ongoing updates.
COVID-19 AND YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS

how it works

Step 1: Start the Intake Process ON THE PHONE or ONLINE.
Please CALL our office at  (416) 861-0677 x702
NOTE: If you have Caller ID,
the return call from the Intake worker may show as NO CALLER ID or PRIVATE Number
CLICK HERE to access intakes online.
We currently accept walk-in intakes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:00AM - 4:30PM
only for individuals without a phone or online access.

Step 2: Provide your information
Information required for service (Mandatory):
  • Name, address, ID (if available), household income, a description of your legal issue
Information collected for statistical purposes (Optional):
  • Date of birth, race and ethnicity information
If we do not provide service for your legal issue we will refer you, where possible, to another service.

Step 3: Provide relevant documents related to your legal issue.
We cannot confirm your appointment without documents
Documents include, but are not limited to:
  • any correspondence with third parties (landlord, assistance provider, immigration, your employer)
  • all legal notices you have received (hearing dates, eviction notices, decision letters)
If you do not have all the required documents you may be directed to request them from the Landlord and Tenant Board, the Ontario Disability Support Program/Ontario Works, Immigration, or your Employer.
If you are creating an intake via phone, please be prepared to scan or email your documents to us.
If you are not sure whether you have all the necessary documents or you are not sure which documents you need, we recommend starting the intake process on the phone so you can be advised which documents you need and where to get them.

Step 4: Attend your scheduled appointment
  • Appointments are scheduled with a lawyer on the phone. Please be ready for your call at your scheduled time.
  • During your appointment you will be either given advice or have your file assigned to a lawyer depending on the stage and complexity of your legal matter.
  • All appointments are private and confidential, however, having an appointment does not mean that you have retained a lawyer at NLS to act on your behalf.
  • If you are unable to attend your appointment you should call to reschedule. If you miss your appointment and do not call we cannot guarantee that you will be contacted promptly to have the appointment rescheduled.

Print and complete the form below to bring with you when you come to make an appointment. This form can also be completed on site at our office during regular business hours.
