Jennifer Stone
Jennifer Stone is a staff lawyer focusing on immigration law and income security matters. At NLS Jennie provides a range of immigration law services including before the Immigration and Refugee Board, the Federal Court, and the Social Benefits Tribunal. Jennie acted as co-counsel for the Canadian Council for Refugees as intervenor in the case of Kanthasamy v Canada (Minister of Immigration & Citizenship) at the Supreme Court of Canada. Jennie is active in the Canadian Council for Refugees as a member of its Executive Committee, and also contributes to the Toronto South Local Immigration Partnership by serving on its Council. Jennie regularly delivers public legal education workshops to newcomer-serving community agencies on immigration law topics. Just prior to joining NLS Jennie spent 3 years co-founding the Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre (now the Justice Centre Hong Kong), a legal aid clinic for primarily South Asian and African refugees claiming protection before UNHCR in Hong Kong. She persuaded five international law firms and a number of local foundations to fund this clinic, and to contribute trained pro bono lawyers to represent refugee claimants. After completing her Honours Bachelor of Arts from McGill University and a Master’s degree in International Development & Communications from the London School of Economics, Jennie worked for international organizations in Namibia, Bosnia, and the UK. She then studied law at the University of Toronto and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2005. She articled at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, and has focused her practice on immigration law ever since. |
