civil litigation (suing for damages)

Legal Aid Ontario does not provide or fund any services for civil litigation (suing someone for damages). You can get assistance from the following services:

Law Society (Lawyer and Paralegal) Referral Service
Phone: 416-947-3330
You may find a lawyer or paralegal and get a free 30 minute consultation by calling the Law Society Referral Service. The consultation is free, but you will have to pay yourself for any legal services.
The Law Society allows lawyers to provide services on what is called a "Contingency Fee Basis". This means that if a lawyer accepts your case on a contingency fee basis you might not have to pay the lawyer until your case is completed. However, the lawyer will sign an agreement with you that the lawyer will take a certain percentage (this can sometimes be 25% or higher) of the damages you get from the court. Depending on your agreement with the lawyer, you will usually not have to pay anything if you do not win your case. You can call the Law Society Referral Service and specifically ask for civil lawyers who accept Contingency Fees.
