Our Work & Your Support
NLS provides direct legal services to more than 1500 clients and community members each year. In addition we make hundreds of referrals, and engage and assist hundreds more through our public legal education, law reform and community development work. And we do all this and more with a permanent staff of only seven people!
NLS is able to provide both high quality and high volume services largely due to our highly motivated and dedicated staff and Board of Directors, and with the support of the community. NLS is also able to realize the long recognized advantages inherent in the legal clinic model. Not only is NLS highly responsive to community needs, it is a lean and highly efficient organization. For example, NLS does not have any full time managers or administrators; all staff members, including the Clinic Directors, provide front line services to our clients.
We are also able to draw from the vast institutional experience and expertise present within the legal clinic system as a whole. This rich pool of resources allows us to consult on and receive opinions and other litigation support in difficult cases. We also greatly benefit from Legal Aid Ontario's highly expert Clinic Resource Office. These resources allow us to deliver quality services at a level far beyond our modest resources.
We are very fortunate to be part of Ontario's legal aid delivery system, and to receive core funding from Legal Aid Ontario. But the complexity of and demand for legal services in our community has been growing over the years. For example, we saw a 22% jump in the demand for Housing Law services last year.
To keep meeting these demands NLS accepts and greatly appreciates your donations. NLS is a non-profit corporation and a registered charity that is able to issue tax receipts for donations. Funds raised this way assist us in enhancing our services through the use of articling students, social workers and strategic administrative support. They also help us assist the community in other ways; e.g. NLS has in the past provided scholarships to eligible community members pursuing careers in law and social justice. Donating to us is a great way of showing your support for NLS and for the work that we do in our community.
If you are unable to support us financially, you can still show us your support in other ways. You can become an NLS Member or volunteer to serve on our Board of Directors. You can also let Legal Aid Ontario and your elected officials know if you think we're doing a good job (you can contact LAO here, your MPP here, and your City Councillor here). And please feel free to let us know directly if you appreciate the work we're doing - your kind words are always a great morale booster for our staff!
Finally, from everyone at NLS: a heartfelt thank you for all the support that we have gotten from our community, funder, donors and well-wishers. We couldn't do this without you!
